GEW 2016 celebrated in Pakistan
Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2016 was celebrated all over the world from November 14 to 20 2016. Pakistan was no exception to these celebrations. Hashtag #GENPK and #GEW2016 accompanied the activities organized during GEW in Pakistan and highlighted entrepreneurial endeavors in Pakistan on social media. All over Pakistan, GEW was organized by Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) Pakistan in collaboration with its partner organizations.
GEW is an endeavor that strives to celebrate and highlight the efforts of entrepreneurs in boosting the economy. Without these risk-takers and innovators, Pakistan’s economy will be in even greater trouble. With the efforts of GEW, Pakistani population should realize that financial future and integrity lies in entrepreneurship and job-creation rather than job-seeking. Activities held during GEW are especially targeted at encouraging existing and future entrepreneurs to strive ahead with their plans.
The spirit of GEW was infused all over Pakistan from 14th to 20th of November. More than twenty events were organized all over Pakistan to celebrate GEW 2016. Many organizers hosted multiple-day events to reach a maximum of people and to provide exposure to as many in the locality as possible. A major chunk of the events were organized in Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi and Peshawar, however cities like Gujranwala, would not be left behind in entrepreneurial endeavors. Most of this year’s events consisted of discussion sessions, presentations as well as physical activity designed to attract a younger crowd.
US Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. David Hale, hosted a reception for Pakistani entrepreneurs and different stakeholders of entrepreneurship ecosystem. Mr. Kashif M. Khan, President Global Entrepreneurship Network Pakistan and Ms. Anusha Rehman, Federal Minister of IT and Telecommunications were among the guests.
The Millennium University College (TMUC) Islamabad organized a two-day event. The first day began with a mega fashion show "The Millennium Fashion Parade" followed by musical evening whereas on the second day, panel discussion on the topics "Ignite the Entrepreneur within - The Success Stories” and “Junior Entrepreneurs: Today’s Small Idea Tomorrows Big Business” followed by a musical night were organized. TMUC Gujranwala organized National Wall Graffiti Competition and Fashion Parade 2016 to attract more youngsters to pursue entrepreneurial activities.
Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) organized a discussion session for the benefit of aspiring entrepreneurs so they can learn from the experience of established entrepreneurs.
Plan9, Technology Incubator of Punjab Information Technology Board, celebrated GEW by organizing eight day celebrations from the 14-21 November. They hosted a delegation from Austin, Texas during this time period and allowed them a taste of Pakistani entrepreneurial spirit. The delegation hailed from a diverse background and their international experience and exposure provided a unique element to the participants of the activities organized by Plan9.
Islamabad Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IWCCI) organized GEN Ignite! Episode 3 on the 18th of November. Guest Speakers included Zeeshan Shafquat Malik, Serial Entrepreneur/Founder of Khyber Dodai; Navera Waheed, CEO Cygnus Solutions Pvt. Ltd; Wajiha Habib, Co-Founder/CTO Cygnus Solutions. These entrepreneurs shared their experiences and struggles with young people to motivate them.
Roots International Schools (RIS) and Metropolitan International University College (MIUC) collectively organized an event to celebrate GEW 2016 and to raise awareness among their students about the importance of entrepreneurship. RIS-MIUC continuously work to stimulate and encourage entrepreneurial culture in their student body. Similarly, Iqra University Karachi Campus organized week-long activities from November 15-20 to instill in their students with the spirit of entrepreneurship.
A variety of other organizations participated in GEW 2016: TMUC Peshawar; TMUC Lahore; CIRCLE; VISIONi; Indus University Karachi; University of Karachi ICCBS; NetSol Technologies; STARTUP HUB and COMSATS.
