About Global Entrepreneurship Week United Kingdom
Global Entrepreneurship Week is the world’s largest celebration of the innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare.
From the 17th until the 23RD of November, GEW inspires people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators. These activities, from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings, connect participants to potential collaborators, mentors and even investors—introducing them to new possibilities and exciting opportunities.
In the UK the GEW campaign is hosted by Youth Business International, a global NGO dedicated to helping young entrepreneurs get started in business. Members of the YBI network also host GEW in further ten countries, giving the UK community even stronger links to the global entrepreneurship movement.
Last year in the UK more than 600 partner organisations hosted over 6000 events that reached more than 300,000 entrepreneurial people across the country. As a result of our leading campaign the GEWUK team was awarded the title of Country of the Year by the global coordinators of GEW, the Kauffman Foundation.
GEW also started life in the UK, as Enterprise Week in 2008, and has since grown into a truly global campaign taking place simultaneously in over 140 countries—with 24,008 partner organizations planning 33,846 activities that directly engage millions of participants every year.
The beauty of this campaign is that is offers something for everyone, from the aspirational entrepreneur thinking of taking their first step into running their own business, to established entrepreneurs looking to connect to the VC or expert who can drive their business to the next level.
This year we are asking participants to Get Connected!
For many people, the thought of starting up their own business is overwhelming, and many entrepreneurs don’t make it to the next stage because they don’t make the right connections. Our own research shows us that aspiring entrepreneurs and start-up entrepreneurs are eager to access practical support and networks through Global Entrepreneurship Week.
Global Entrepreneurship Week continues to attract and engage high-profile entrepreneurs who are enthusiastic to share their personal experiences and insights. Meanwhile, world leaders on each continent and local elected officials alike have embraced the campaign—through proclamations as well as participation—as they look to fuel the economic engine of high-growth startups in their own countries and communities.
But GEW is more than just an awareness campaign supported by world leaders and celebrity entrepreneurs. It is about unleashing ideas and doing what it takes to bring them to life—spotting opportunities, taking risks, solving problems, being creative, building connections and learning from both failure and success. It is about thinking big and making your mark on the world—doing good while doing well at the same time.
